Our YouTube Channel

The New Roof

It was a longtime coming, but once they started they were done in 3½ weeks!

1st major project behind us.

Whew!

MOVIES MOVIES MOVIES

Step right up for your next movie!

Uhm, well, actually its going to be a few short videos from Febbraio “February” so cuddle-up to someone, get a blanket and a hot cup of tea.

Never mind, just enjoy!

About Us

Please enjoy our videos and photos.

But please, please, pray for us.

We covet your prayers.

God’s Beauty

I just can’t get over the beauty here. Every day that Naida and I walk it’s different. The incredible sights, and colors, and plants. This afternoon we saw a little red fox cross the road. This evening there was a porcupine, or something like it near our front door.

We are so blessed. I can’t say anything else!

I Gotta Add One More

I’m sorry, but this one allows you to laugh at me.

You see, I understood A LOT LESS than I made it sound like I did. A LOT LESS!!!

Ohhhhh, me.

B-n-B Time

Naida and I “accidently” found a BnB that is a 14th century convent. While the surroundings are incredible, and the breakfast is always brilliant, the dinners made by Claudio are the real star, and, frankly, the reason Naida and I spend the night at a B-n-B only 17 miles from our home.

Antonio runs the place, Claudio “chefs” and we are grateful.

Did I tell you we don’t order dinner. No! Claudio makes “what’ere he wants.”

“Incredibile!”

A Few Photos Tell The Story of Febbraio

Il Tetto

Il Tetto (the roof) was project number one in our home.

Alotta Work

These guys worked so hard. Carrying everything by hand, including the coffee we GLADLY supplied 3 times per day.

Their Attention to Detail

Naida and I realized early that these are not “general contractors” — They are artisans.

Transportation

Getting around in Italy is very easy and inexpensive, but if you expect drivers to respect your space, “DON’T”!

11 Minutes!

That’s all it took, 11 minutes, for the valley to go from, “No fog” to “Fog-filled.”

“Incredibile”

Our Online Tutor

Isabella went to school to learn to teach foreigners. She STILL takes lessons, herself, to learn English.

Carnivale

But this “Carnivale” was family oriented. It was a brilliant celebration.

Friends

We are so grateful for the various friends we have met. From ex-pats to locals we are a part of a completely unique community.

Another Project

Soon we’ll start on this HUGE room, a new “soggiorno” for us (I think).

January Review 2026

January Review 2026

January 2026

Remember that Naida and I have a YouTube channel you might find interesting

January Brought . . .

  • Friends, new friends & renewed friendships.

  • Food, oh my, food. Naida says she’s never eaten more cheese or pasta (not to mention her favorite pizza, made with truffles).

  • Roof repair, at least the beginning.

  • And ITALIAN LEARNING! Tutto i Giorni (every day), in class with others, over the internet with our live tutor, and in the Piazza, with Ivana and Romano.

Christmas till January 6.

That’s right, Christmas is celebrated here until January 6th. Needless to say, we had a number of events we could go to, even after December 25th.

Clockwise, beginning with the detailed Nativity scene is very typical here. I can’t imagine how long it takes to put one of these together.

Next is a huge Christmas tree in old-town L’Aquila. We spent the night there due to an early morning meeting to get one of our documents, and we didn’t want to deal with snow and ice. We found a great Bed and Breakfast in the heart of “L’Aquila Centro” which suited our needs well.

The service we attended was a “post-Christmas” musical which was very Evangelical in the choices of music.

Finally, I thought Naida was stunning in her suit she wore to the New Years Eve party and since we didn’t leave until after midnight, I decided that photo qualified for 2026 photos.

Friends, NOT the TV Program.

Friends are a HUGE part of our life. Amazingly, in the USA we barely knew our neighbors. Here? We are constantly meeting new ones and getting reacquainted with old ones. Pier (yes, that’s the proper spelling) who I’m hugging took us to dinner one evening, his wife was there, and she ordered. AMAZING! She ordered things we had no idea were on the menu.

Mark’s Hair-Care!

Our Italian Learning!

Mark’s Tooth!

January forced us to deal with some issues we had put off in every other trip to Capestrano. But we were here permanently now, so I needed a “Parrucchiera” in my own village. Alessandra has been an answer to my “hair-prayers” (not that I pray about that sort of thing, of course).

Our “Comune” payed for and set up a series of Italian lessons for “Straniere” to learn the local language (local dialects not withstanding).

And then there’s the issue of a dentist, when you need it. He’s a GREAT DENTIST and I couldn’t be more pleased, but drilling into my tooth without novocaine was, well, interesting. I’m lying, IT WAS SCARY!

Snow? Not Here, Baby!

One of the things we love about Capestrano is that we get to see the snow, OUT YONDER. It is beautiful, and tops the mountains in our valley, on the OTHER-SIDE of our valley.

Until, that is, a few days this year.

Naida and I were “kind-of” okay with it, but my Aloe Vera plants are still grumpy at me.

Food? It’s How We do Life Here.

I’m serious! When you’re at a restaurant, you own the table, all night! It’s amazing. The waiters are not kicking you out to prepare for the next sitting. I can’t tell you how often we do 3-4 hour dinners and 2-3 hour lunches.

And, regarding the food we put into our bodies, OUR BODIES notice the difference the moment we start to eat it. When we returned to the USA, after being in Italy for two months, our bodies wanted to rebel at the food.

And then when you find something you like, you keep ordering it. At this particular restaurant Naida has found a Sausage and Truffle Pizza which is incredible.

I wish I knew what she was smiling at, but doesn’t she look like she’s just eaten half the pizza all by herself?

Vaca in Abruzzo!

Our “Region” is known for its outdoor activities. Italians love to vaca in Abruzzo. Our little valley is known by two names; “Valle del Tirino” & “Valle Tritana” for the three mountain springs which feed the “Fiumi Tirino” (Tirino River).

Naida and I try to walk every day. We have found some brilliant trails, paved and not, where we can walk for hours.

Incredibile! (that’s the Italian word, not a misspelling of the English)

Are We Having Fun Yet?

YOU never have to ask that here. Believe me, WE NEVER have to ask that here. The move hasn’t been easy, but we are much more comfortable than we were the first year.

We walk everywhere. We try to never take the car up to the piazza. We have a brilliant little outdoor market every Friday, our own mini supermarket, a doctor, pharmacy, post office . . . all the comforts of home.

Oh, hey! It is our home, at least the home in the upper left corner. The home in the lower left corner is a former restaurant right on the river. It looks like it is being renovated. We’ll see. The river actually runs under the edge of the building. One of the videos below shows you this building and the SUPER CLEAR Fiumi Tirino.

All the Comforts of Home.

Naida is actually carrying down the hill the “separated-out garbage” which was not taken by the garbage men on that day . . . we had put out the wrong bags for the day.

Naida has done A PHENOMENAL JOB making our new house a home. Using ideas like, mirrored armoire’s to give the room more depth. And glass shower doors which open around the sink without hitting the sink.

And the coup de gras? Her hair. I feel sorry for her. My hair is pretty oily but hers is pretty dry and the water here has challenged it. But she is getting the better of it, trying various remedies, and talking to the older women who have lived here for a long time. Even I’ve gotten involved making a “Jojoba oil & Rosemary Concoction” which I’ll try to convince her to use.

They Started on Our Tetto (our roof)!

YIPPEE!

I don’t need to say anymore than that. That one word says it all! Believe me.

But I will say this, Santo and Sebastiano, a father and son team are brilliant! I have loved watching Santo look at a problem, and then he thinks thru the solution. You can see the wheels turning over in his head.

We are very, very grateful for them. Next month I’ll have more photos of where they’re working right now. At the beginning of April they’ll get started on our “Parcheggio” (parking area).

Did I tell you how much Naida and I appreciate them?

I’m Sorry for These Photos.

I am. I’m sorry. I got greedy!

There are so many good, no, GREAT photos of our valley from our place, I just wanted to give you a taste of them.

Depending upon the weather, sometimes 10 minutes is all it takes to fill the valley with fog and then reveal the beauty.

What can I say?

È magnifico!

2024 Review

Embracing Our 2024 Journey

This journey has required us to trust the Lord, and WAIT UPON HIM for everything.

Not so easy when everything is new.

The photo below I took from our bus, the first day in Italy. Little did I know Naida and I would live this “Mark-ism” through many trials.

Our Path to Italy

The “Mark-n-Naida” Radar DID NOT SEE THIS ONE COMING

In January & February when we planned our Christmas Holiday, little did we know a new life was on its way!

2024 began with Mark seriously considering expanding Common Thread Ministries with Daniel Prayer Garden. While Naida wanted a different Christmas Holiday experience, away from the beach.

2024: A Year of Transformation

As we embarked on this transformative year, we couldn’t anticipate the significance of the changes that would redefine our lives. From relocating to a new country to embracing a spiritual intimacy, each step was filled with excitement and anticipation and, in all honesty, challenges.

Read our story, as we have told it to so many people this year . . .

February '24

A DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

In early 2024, Naida made a good argument she’d like to try something, “away from the sun,” this year for Christmas.

Being a good husband, Mark agreed (AFTER HE ARGUED).

So they chose Italy.

March '24

ENTICEMENTS

As Naida started to prepare their tours and look at things to do, during Christmas she started finding surprises in Italy, which she did not expect.

  • Cost of living incentives.
  • The rich beauty of the people.
  • The healthiness of the foods.
  • And the help, IE: AHomeInItaly.com

When she came to Mark with the thought of moving to Italy, he agreed it was interesting, but his ministry opportunities were too great for him to consider Italy seriously.

They both agree, that, “surprisingly” Naida backed off until one day Mark said, “Naida, I have to give up the idea of expanding Common Thread Ministries into the Daniel Prayer Garden.”

“Why?” She asked, knowing that Mark was resolved to this decision. She knew it wasn’t about the money. So what was it?

“Because, at 66 years old, God did not call me to be an administrator, He called me to bring people into prayer.”

March '24

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

IMMEDIATELY afterwards, the Lord started “melding-the-hearts” of Mark & Naida unto the idea (her idea, by the way) of moving to Italy.

Which was sure to be a few years down the road. (YEAH, RIGHT)

Little did they know the Lord had other ideas.

April '24

A TRUSTWORTHY CONSULTANT

Mark admits he is ALWAYS SKEPTICAL of salespeople on public forums. So when Naida showed him a video from www.AHomeInItaly.com and he turned to her and said, we need to follow this guy, she was surprised, and grateful, but surprised.

Greatly surprised!

April '24

BUT, THERE WAS ONE CONDITION

They both agreed, no matter how much they liked a home, they would NEVER buy it sight unseen.

Absolutely not, no way.

April 4 '24

BOOKING CONFIRMED

Mark & Naida purchased their tickets, for their “Italian Home Purchase Tour,” to go to Italy “JUST TO SEE” if they really wanted to move to Italy.

Don’t miss the date (Thursday, April 4)

April 8 '24

FINANCIAL ADVISOR MEETING

Mark & Naida met with their financial advisor who said, “Naida, you could retire today.”

Don’t miss the date & time (Thursday, April 4; 11:00am)

April 8 '24

EMPLOYER MEETING

Naida met with the president of her firm, and they worked out the final day of her employment, September 30.

Just 4 days before, they had purchased tickets to go on their Italian Home Purchase Tour, set for October 20th.

Don’t miss the date & time (Thursday, April 4; 1:00pm)

April 10 '24

HOME FOR SALE

2 days later they put their home up for sale.

Don’t miss the date (Wedesday, April 10)

April 12 '24

HORSE FOR SALE

2 days later they put their horse up for sale.

Don’t miss the date (Friday, April 12)

May & June '24

ITALIAN FAMILIARIZATION

Mark & Naida spent the next few months familiarizing themselves with everything Italian, from the religious focus, to the language nuances to the great food.

They continued to be amazed at the cost of living, the beautiful views, and all they read about the people, especially the people in the small villages in the Abruzzo region.

June '24

THE MINISTRIES

Mark was thinking he could take Common Thread Ministries and his novel-writing to Italy. But when they realized the visa they would be qualifying for did not allow retirees to make money while living in Italy, he had to abandon his plans.

And while it was “hard to swallow” he would later realize that serving Naida would be his new ministry.

So, finding Kevin to take over CTM & Joe to take over Mark’s praying in DC, www.CommonThreadMinistries.org is in GREAT hands.

Even Mark’s book publishing, which went to Bruce is excelling: www.CommonThreadPublishing.com

July '24

THE ITALIAN HOUSE

Independent of one another, Mark & Naida kept going back to the same home, and so, after agreeing TO NEVER BUY SIGHT UNSEEN, they pulled the trigger on a home outside the city walls of an ancient village. You can see the original sale video here: www.MarkMirza.com/House/

August '24

THE US HOUSE

As it would happen, Mark & Naida needed their US home to sell by a certain date, to keep the process moving. Upon advice from their realtor, they repainted, and the home sold in a week. I memorialized the story here: https://markmirza.com/home-sold/

September '24

HOMELESS & JOBLESS

It turned out that their US home closing date and Naida’s last day on the job was September 27th.

They like to say, “On September 27th we became jobless and homeless. AND WE ARE SO EXCITED.”

Thank goodness, Greg & Marie put us up in their home for 3 weeks.

October '24

A NEW WORLD

They left the USA on October 20th, and arrived in Italy on October 21st. After a beautiful drive by bus to Pescara, they saw their new home the next day and then met with like-minded folks who also desire to move to Italy.

“The first thing I noticed,” Naida says, “Is that we could walk around at night and have no fears.”

She continues, “The people are friendly and inviting, the medieval towns are beautiful, and the food is incredible.”

But the challenges would come over the next few weeks.

November '24

NEW CHALLENGES

We told you Mark learned his new ministry was his wife. What we did not tell you is that he did not learn that fact until they arrived into Capestrano.

The new residence and, “details of the unknown” are a strain on one who has been at the helm of project management for nearly 40 years.

But together, Naida & Mark are enjoying their new adventure and “THEIR NEW DIGS.”

They opened up about the fears in this post: https://markmirza.com/adventure-and-fear/

December '24

AN ITALIAN CHRISTMAS

What a Christmas! Mark has praised Naida’s choices even admitting that Italy was better than the beach. Okay, in all honesty, he did struggle saying that, a bit. But look at Mark’s Musings on their YouTube channel. You will see how much he loved this Christmas Holiday. Here’s his PLAYLIST.

December '24

THE TAKE AWAY IS SIMPLE

The photograph above, Mark took and wrote on their first day in Italy. Little did they know they would go back to it often. And probably for the rest of their lives.

You see, while God has clearly spoken in their lives about moving to Italy, they have had to wait on Him for TONS OF OTHER ISSUES.

Mark has often said, “If God is sovereign, He will overcome your doubts. So, if you still have doubts, you haven’t heard from the Lord.”

Go back and read his photo:

Until I know I’ve heard from You, Lord . . .

I know I haven’t heard from You, Lord.

Our CURRENT Christmas

FLORENCE

Our Amazing AirBnB in Florence Italy

Naida posted a GREAT video of our INCREDIBLE B-n-B in Florence.

Take a Look . . .

Il Duomo Parade

I had fun posting this INCREDIBLE Parade Outside our Window in Firenze (the city we call Florence).

We got to watchit, and hear it from the warmth of our GREAT location . . .

BOLSENA

Our accommodations in a Bolsena Palace

As always, Naida’s video was a brilliant showcase for our stay in a Palace, which, has been in this family for about 500 years.

Completely different world than the one we are from . . .

How Do I Get the Gift?

I had only just only one question. I wanted to know how to get that gift outside our window!

I Never Figured it Out, BUT, we found a GREAT Restaurant, in the bottom of the palace we stayed in. and we LOVED the owner (Stefano) and his staff, Eduardo & Silvia . . .

Mercato

Mercato

Don't Confuse Shopping With Shopping

“Shopping” is the English word and “Shopping” is the Italian word.

We’re learning to do life differently here in Italy. For the last 25 years, we’ve taken 2 weeks to build a grocery list and then we stop at Kroger and buy groceries. And that’s about it, every 2 weeks, for the last 25 years.

Marco?

Yep, and There’s a Story

But, I’ll tell it another day.

Grocery shopping is a lot different now.

Now we go to the market to get something fresh to eat over the next couple days. For the next few days it’s fresh, but, it’s got to be eaten within the next few days, otherwise it expires.

And, DOES IT TASTE FRESH?????

WHOA BABY!!!!!

Not Surprisingly, Market Day is a Big Day Around Here

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS

I bought my latest cap/hat from Rockman a couple weeks ago, who has become a dear friend.

FRUITS AND VEGGIES

And it has been sweet to get to know the girls (and their dad, I think), at the vendor who sells fruit and veggies.

THE CHICKEN GUY

The “chicken-guy” has the best, forgive me, THE BEST rotisserie chicken, we’ve ever had.

COME AND VISIT

When you come to visit, we promise to help you enjoy “Giorno di mercato.”

I’M EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT THIS . . .

This week Naida bought a blanket she now uses when she makes me watch a Hallmark Chik-Flick with her.

And today, Naida bought some slippers with a little “foo-foo” on them.

They are SO-FAR outside her normal comfort zone. They’re barely long enough for her already small feet. They have a 1 inch heel, but they’re cute and we had the opportunity to support the locals.

Tour

Our Fearless Leader

DAVID BENTON FROM AHOMEINITALY.COM
Naida and I affectionately call him Italy-David.

Italy-David's Tours of Homes in the Abruzzo Region

What A Great Trip for Naida & I

Some asked, “Since you are already committed to buying a home, why go on these tours?”

The answer is easy, “Italy-David.”

You see, we have come to trust his judgment, and we knew that watching him describe Abruzze communities would be good for us to get, “A lay of the land.”

WE LOVED IT!

And we are so glad we went; First, because of all the new friends we made. Second, because of what we learned about the communities. Third, we appreciate our home, SOOOOO MUCH MORE now. And fourth, the food!

The Last Property We Saw

This is Mark . . . I didn’t expect this. But the last property we saw, was in Casoli. I didn’t realize we were going to look at it, but we did.

AND I AM SO GLAD.

You see, the home we all saw, was the home Naida and I considered our second choice. And, after walking the property, we both agreed, IT IS STILL OUR SECOND CHOICE and by a LARGE margin, Praise the Lord.

This morning I found a passage in Scripture which encapsulates our experience, thus far (I trust you pardon me for my specific application).

Psalm 134 (HCSB)
Now praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord . . .
Lift up your hands . . . and praise the Lord!
May the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth, bless you [in Capestrano, Italy, while He is] in Zion.

Naida and I began the day praising the Lord.

And then we went into school mode, learning from the Italian Driving Manual.

Make Sure You See it ALL . . .

(If your phone only shows words in the scrolling boxes below, TAP THE SENTENCE to see the pictures associated with the scrolling box)

The photos are GREAT!

"

How’s that for beauty? And I ain’t just talking about the building.

Lots of well behaved cats . . . and no rats, BTW.

We met some VERY SPECIAL friends. This is Daniel and Keller from Singapore.

All together now, say, “Ahhhh,” for Joe and Kara.

This photo has inspired me to a new detail on our place, A WRAP-AROUND BALCONY. I was told that it is low on the  list of priorities.

And then there are some architectural details you would only wish on . . .

This is Domenico. He is pointing out a part of our property which just became available. It’s what we affectionately call, “The Ruin.” It is attached to our living quarters but not a part of them, so we don’t have to do anything to it (until my wrap-around balcony is completed), I’m just sayin’.

Naida just made the beautiful flowers beautifuller, and I’m sticking to it!

We are now in a rental from our friend, Louis Ortiz at “RentInAbruzzo@Gmail.com” but for this to happen, Steve & Gina moved out for us. Thanks guys, now we don’t have to lug 4 suitcases around. AND BEFORE YOU ASK. The only reason we have 4 suitcases is because we knew we were going to have access to our new home soon.

Wow! What a view. Incredible.

Do you think you could get used to walking out your front door every morning, to this?

This is Italy-David and me talking over something important, but I don’t know what. BUT IT WAS IMPORTANT! Thank you Naida for capturing the historical moment!

And this was our group! Folks we will remain in contact with, in some cases, forever.
