For My Doctors

A Heartfelt Goodbye & Tribute to All My Docs

Or as we will soon start to say in Italy: Professionisti Medici

But first . . .

Lord, thank You for so many times that You’ve protected me from falling and hurting myself, from getting into an automobile accident and from doing stupid, injurious things. I’m fortunate for the way You’ve taken care of me, Lord.

I am so blessed, and that’s another Golden Thread, amongst the Dark Threads that You, the Weaver, is using to build the tapestry of mine and Naida’s lives. I get to look back, Lord, and see that You are allowing me and my bride to retire in good health.

Nevertheless, I want to thank my doctors, I mean, il mio professionisti medici.

Mark & Naida, In Good Health, Praise the Lord

I’m constantly sharing that, by God’s grace, Naida and I get to retire in good enough health to enjoy retirement, to travel like Naida has always wanted to and to continue a ministry of encouragement to the people we meet on our ADVENTURE. In other words, WE GET TO ENJOY OUR MOVE TO ITALY!

Frankly we consider ourselves very, “Lucky.”

And yes, I use that “L” word carefully since I’m in the prayer business. Truly, we’re blessed.

A Few Years Ago . . .

Acknowledging that I’m getting older, I made the decision to, “NOT TO FIX ALL THE DENTS.”

My doctors don’t always understand that motto. And certainly my wife doesn’t always agree, but I think it makes GOOD sense.

Anyway, I want to thank my doctors . . .

After All . . .

After all . . .

A few years ago, my heart was checked and the doctor’s response was a wheelchair and the words, “You ain’t leaving.”

I remember the first thing I thought was, “How is Naida gonna get home from work?” You see we have always had just one car, and I had it at the hospital. (This was before Uber). Thank the Lord for Pastor Tim and his wife.

ENTER: My Cardiologist, Dr. Joseph Miller.

Thanks to my doctors, I was able to experience A QUADRUPLE BYPASS rather than experince a heart attack (hmmm, that doesn’t quite sound right).

After all . . .

A few years ago I caught Covid and was too stubborn to go to a doctor. When I was finally convinced to go to emergency they started doing ALL THESE TESTS. I remembered thinking, “I’m a poor pastor, quit doing these unnecessary tests.” Well, one of those tests found cancer on one of my kidneys (is a kidney what you have 2 of, please forgive the bad sentence construction).

ENTER: My Kidney Specialist, Dr. Spencer Kozinn and his PA, Leena John

A few weeks later my NEW DOCTOR was doing Laparoscopic surgery to remove the cancer. I kept praying that to keep his fingers limber he would play a lot of video games leading up to my surgery.

Thru this Kidney Cancer process I made a video called Generational Curses of Generational Blessings. You see, my mom and grandmother had died from the same cancer. The video is only 2 1/2 minutes long. I think it’ll challenge the way you view both of those subjects.

After all . . .

I don’t think I’ve had a Primary Care Physician since I was about 12.

But thru this process (the process of getting older) I’ve met and been very grateful for Dr. Emilio Lacayo.

He doesn’t understand or agree with my motto, “I’m too old to fix all the dents.” But he’s been great, especially as a doc I can count on to answer questions I have.

DISCLAIMER: That’s not Dr. Lacayo, it is an AI image, but my Doc is a good looking guy too, in case you were wondering.

DISCLAIMER: That’s not Dr. Kauffman, it is also an AI image. But it was supposed to show a Dentist working with dental instruments IN THE PATIENT’S MOUTH. I’m just assuming that the AI knew the “Fun” I am trying to convey with this post.

And Then . . .

There’s my dentist. He and I have been together for better than 22 years. He’s always interested in my trips to Washington DC where I pray for politicians (WITHOUT TELLING THEM HOW TO VOTE).

We’ve developed a close friendship (although he’s never invited me to his home for dinner, now that I think about it).

Any way, there are some GREAT THINGS he’s done for me!

Let me tell you one of them. A few years ago, he gave me the ability to do something I haven’t been able to do FOR YEARS. Thanks to my dentist, I now get to eat corn in the cob, (still on the cob, the corn, not me, you know, I don’t have to cut the corn off the cob before I eat it, TMI).

Anyway, I said, “Goodbye” to him the other day, which is what prompted this post . . .

I shared with him that I won’t see him this side of heaven, unless he comes to Italy . . . Well, I guess I could see him again if there’s an emergency in my mouth between now and October 20th.

At any rate, while he had my mouth open and was going to town in there, gluing on a new cap, or something, I started thinking about all the China I’ve broken and never been able to fix.

I asked him if I could interrupt him and speak. He graciously pulled out of my mouth, undid the gizmo which kept my mouth open, pulled out the suction tube, clleaned around my mouth and motioned for me to speak.

I said, “Tom, when you retire you can stick up a shield in front of your house that says, I FIX PORCELAIN.”

After he got done laughing he told me to shut up.

Lots of Cherished Memories

Docs, To Each and Every One of You

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU!

And remember, everyone else DOWNSIZES when they retire, Naida and I are UPSIZING so you can have a room to rest a day or two before you head off to “Vaca in Europe.”

And the same goes to all our friends who are reading this. Fly into Rome and we intend to be about 2 hours East.

Of course, we also covet your prayers . . .
